What is an Ignition Intelock Device?
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a breathalyzer-like device installed in a vehicle that prevents the engine from starting if the driver has been drinking alcohol. It’s typically used as a legal requirement for individuals convicted of driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) offenses.
If an IID detects alcohol while the driver is operating the vehicle, the device will record the event and notify the interlock service provider. The provider will then report the violation to the court or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), and the driver may face further consequences, such as fines, license suspension, or jail time.
How It Works:
-
Breath Test Before Starting the Car: Before starting the vehicle, the driver must blow into the device. The IID measures the driver’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC).
-
Prevents the Car from Starting: If the BAC is above a pre-set legal limit (usually 0.02% or lower, depending on the jurisdiction), the IID prevents the car from starting.
-
Rolling Retests: While the car is being driven, the IID will randomly require additional breath tests (known as "rolling retests") to ensure the driver remains alcohol-free during the trip. If the driver fails a retest or doesn't provide a breath sample, the device may issue warnings, log the event, and possibly trigger alarms like flashing lights or a honking horn until the vehicle is turned off.
Legal Use and Purpose:
-
DUI Penalties: Courts may mandate the installation of an ignition interlock device as part of the penalties for a DUI/DWI conviction. It is a way to allow individuals to drive legally while ensuring they remain sober behind the wheel.
-
Monitoring and Reporting: The device keeps records of all test results, failed attempts, and any tampering with the system. This data is often shared with the authorities or monitoring agencies.
Cost:
The offender typically bears the cost of installing, maintaining, and calibrating the IID, with prices ranging from $50 to $150 per month, plus installation fees if appplicable.
Benefits:
-
Prevent Drunk Driving: IIDs are proven to reduce the likelihood of drunk driving and DUI recidivism, as they require sobriety before and during driving.
-
Legal Compliance: Installing an IID allows those convicted of DUI to retain limited driving privileges while complying with court orders or administrative rules.
