How to Check a Court Date in Sedgwick County: 6 Ways That Work

How to check a court date in Sedgwick County District Court and city courts

The fastest way to check a court date in Sedgwick County is to look at the bond paperwork, where the date, time and court are printed. If the paperwork is lost, the 18th Judicial District posts its daily dockets online, and the District Court clerk answers at 316-660-5900 on weekdays. City cases are separate. A Wichita Police ticket or a city misdemeanor is on the Municipal Court calendar, not the county one. This page lists six ways to find the date and what to do if it has already passed.

Case Bail Bonds sends court reminders on the bonds we write. Call (316) 900-1667 if you are on one of our bonds and need your date.

First, which court is it?

Start by finding the right court. Wichita has two criminal courts a block apart, and the smaller cities have their own.

If the case came from The court is Phone
A felony, or a charge filed by the District Attorney Sedgwick County District Court, 525 N Main 316-660-5900
A ticket from a Sheriff’s deputy or the Highway Patrol Sedgwick County District Court, traffic 316-660-9150
A Wichita Police ticket or a city ordinance charge Wichita Municipal Court, 455 N Main 316-268-4611
Derby Police Derby Municipal Court, 229 N Baltimore 316-788-1511
Haysville Police Haysville Municipal Court, 200 W Grand 316-529-5920
Maize Police Maize Municipal Court, 10100 W Grady 316-722-8736

The District Attorney’s traffic page puts the rule plainly: a Wichita Police citation goes to Wichita Municipal Court, and a Sheriff or Highway Patrol citation goes to the Sedgwick County Courthouse on the date on the ticket.

The letters in a District Court case number also tell you the type. CR is criminal, TR is traffic, DM is domestic and SC is small claims.

6 ways to check a court date in Sedgwick County

Six ways to check a court date in Sedgwick County including the daily docket and the court clerk

1. Bond paperwork or the ticket

Every appearance bond lists the court and the date. A traffic citation has the date printed near the bottom. Take a photo of it the day you get it.

2. The daily docket

The 18th Judicial District posts dockets on its docket information page. The court says they are updated once every 15 minutes, and suggests pressing Ctrl+F to search for a name. The dockets cover the current week, so this works best in the days before a hearing. Each entry lists the time, the division and the courtroom.

3. The District Court clerk

Call 316-660-5900. The Criminal Department is on the 7th floor of the courthouse and is open 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday. Have the full name, date of birth and case number ready.

4. The Kansas District Court Public Access Portal

Sedgwick County District Court moved onto the statewide Kansas eCourt system in August 2023. Since then, public case records are available through the Kansas District Court Public Access Portal, which is run by the Kansas Judicial Branch. You can search by name or case number and open the case record. Two limits apply: sealed cases do not appear, and documents filed before the move may not be online. The courthouse also has a public terminal for searches.

5. The city court clerk

The portal and the county docket do not show city cases. For a Wichita city case call Municipal Court at 316-268-4611. For other cities, call the numbers in the table above. Derby holds court every Thursday. Haysville holds court on Tuesdays at 2 p.m. Maize usually holds court on the first four Wednesdays of the month at 4 p.m.

6. Your bondsman or your lawyer

Both have a reason to know your date. A bondsman is liable for the full bond if you miss court, so a bondsman tracks the dates on the bonds they post. Your lawyer gets notice of every setting directly from the court.

How do I find the court date for someone in jail?

For a person still in custody at 141 W Elm, the first hearing is set by the court, and family usually learns of it in one of three ways:

  • The Sedgwick County inmate search shows the charges and bond amounts, which tells you which court has the case.
  • The jail’s automated information line is 316-660-5245.
  • The daily docket marks hearings for people in custody.

Our guide to the first appearance in Sedgwick County explains that first hearing.

Court dates change. Check twice.

A date can move without you asking. Hearings are continued, judges are reassigned and dockets are reset. A notice goes to the address the court has on file, and to your lawyer if you have one.

Three habits prevent most missed dates:

  1. Keep your address current with the court, your lawyer and your bondsman. A notice mailed to an old apartment does not excuse a missed hearing.
  2. Check the docket the week of court and again that morning.
  3. Go even if you are unsure. If your name is not on the docket when you arrive, ask the clerk’s office before you leave and get the new date in writing.

For the day itself, see court dates after bail.

What if the court date already passed?

Act the same day. What you do depends on the court.

Court What to do
District Court criminal case The Sheriff’s instructions send people with a CR warrant to Courtroom 1-1, first floor, 525 N Main, from 10:00 to 10:30 AM on weekdays, with photo ID only
District Court traffic case The District Attorney’s traffic page says to go to the morning traffic docket at 8:30 AM, Monday through Friday, on the first floor of the courthouse
City case Call that city’s court clerk and ask what the judge requires

Time matters because of two Kansas statutes. Under K.S.A. 22-2807 the bond is forfeited at the missed appearance and a warrant is issued. Under K.S.A. 21-5915, a person who does not surrender within 30 days of that forfeiture can be charged with failure to appear. Getting back in front of the judge quickly protects you and your cosigner.

If a warrant has been issued, a planned surrender with a bond arranged is the cleanest fix. Read walk through bonds in Wichita and failure to appear in Kansas.
