How much does a bond cost in Kansas? If you use a bail bondsman, the law sets the floor: a premium of at least 10% of the bond amount. A $10,000 bond costs at least $1,000. At least half of that minimum, $500 in this example, has to be paid before the bond is posted. Those numbers come from K.S.A. 22-2809b and apply in every Kansas county, including Sedgwick. The table below does the math for every common bond amount.

These are legal minimums. A company may charge more than 10%, so ask for the total premium in writing before you sign.
Where do the numbers come from?
K.S.A. 22-2809b governs every compensated surety in Kansas. On price, it says four things.
- The minimum premium is 10% of the face amount of the appearance bond.
- At least half of the minimum premium must be received before the bond is posted.
- Payment must be real. The statute lists United States currency, a check that is properly payable and promptly deposited, a credit or debit card transaction with an approval number, or a completed bank, wire or electronic transfer.
- The rest must be in writing. Any unpaid part of the minimum premium has to be covered by a premium financing agreement.
The same statute makes failing to charge the minimum premium a ground for a court to suspend or end a bondsman’s authority. That is why a 5% bond does not exist in Kansas. An ad that says 5% down is describing the half that is due up front.
What a bondsman cannot charge
The statute also protects you. A court can discipline a bondsman for requiring or accepting anything of value beyond the premium, other than collateral or indemnity to secure the bond. A bondsman also may not lend you the up front half of the premium, and may not own or be tied to a lender that does. That rule was added in 2025.
So the cost of a Kansas bail bond has two parts and no more:
| Part | What it is | Do you get it back? |
|---|---|---|
| Premium | The fee for the bond, at least 10% | No |
| Collateral | Security for the bond, such as a vehicle title, if required | Yes, when the bond is discharged and the account is settled |
If a company quotes other fees, ask what they are for and where the contract allows them. Our list of questions to ask a bail bond company is a good place to start.
How the bond amount itself is decided
The premium follows the bond, so the real question is often why the bond is what it is. A judge sets it under K.S.A. 22-2802, looking at the charge, the evidence, family and community ties, employment, financial resources, criminal record and the record of appearing in court.
Three details change the total a family faces:
- Bonds add up. The Sedgwick County Sheriff lists each charge with its own bond amount, and the total is the sum of the lines. Three $2,500 bonds cost the same premium as one $7,500 bond.
- Some bonds are cash only. Those must be paid in full. See cash only bonds in Sedgwick County.
- One bond has a legal minimum. A person charged with certain sex crimes who has a prior sexually violent conviction must have a bond of at least $750,000.
A bond can be lowered by a judge. See bond reduction in Sedgwick County.
Ways to pay less than 10%
A bondsman cannot go below the minimum, but Kansas law has three routes that cost less.
| Route | Cost | Who qualifies |
|---|---|---|
| Own recognizance | $0 | Decided by the booking sergeant or a judge. See OR bond in Sedgwick County |
| Full cash bond | 100% up front, refunded after the case less costs and fines | Anyone with the money |
| 10% cash deposit with the court clerk | 10% up front, refundable | Bonds of $2,500 or less on some lower level charges, if a judge allows it |
The third one deserves a second look, because it costs the same as a bondsman’s minimum premium and comes back at the end. K.S.A. 22-2802 limits it to Kansas residents with little or no criminal history, no prior failure to appear and no hold from another jurisdiction. A lawyer can ask for it at the first appearance.
Cash bond or bondsman: the math on a $10,000 bond
| Cash bond | Bondsman at the minimum | |
|---|---|---|
| Paid to get out | $10,000 | $500 before posting, $1,000 in total |
| Returned if every court date is kept | $10,000 less costs and fines | $0 |
| Lost if a court date is missed | Up to $10,000 | You owe the bondsman under the contract |
| Money you keep available during the case | $0 | $9,000 |
If the full amount is sitting in savings and you will not need it for months, cash is cheaper in the end. If it is not, a premium is the cost of getting someone home without draining the family.
Paying the premium over time
Half of the minimum is due before posting. The other half can go on a written payment agreement. A cosigner who signs that agreement is responsible for the payments even after the case ends. Read bail bond payment plans in Wichita and bail bond cosigner responsibilities.
