Bail bonds in Derby work a little differently than people expect, because Derby has its own police and its own court, but arrests are booked at the county jail. A person arrested in Derby is taken about ten miles up K-15 and booked at the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility, 141 W Elm in downtown Wichita. City charges are then heard back in Derby, on Thursdays, at 229 N Baltimore. Felonies and other state charges stay in Wichita at the Sedgwick County Courthouse.
Case Bail Bonds is at 705 N Broadway in Wichita, three blocks from that jail. We answer (316) 900-1667 day and night.

Where are people taken after a Derby arrest?
To Wichita. The Sedgwick County Sheriff states that the detention facility books inmates for all Sedgwick County municipalities, and Derby is one of them. That is true for an arrest by the Derby Police Department, a Sheriff’s deputy or the Kansas Highway Patrol.
For a family in Derby, three addresses matter:
| Place | Address | What happens there |
|---|---|---|
| Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility | 141 W Elm, Wichita | Booking, bond posting and release |
| Derby Municipal Court | 229 N Baltimore, Derby | City ordinance cases, every Thursday |
| Sedgwick County Courthouse | 525 N Main, Wichita | Felonies and state charges |
So the trip to post bond or pick someone up is to downtown Wichita, not to the Derby police station. Our guide to a Sedgwick County Jail release covers pick up, property and ID.
How do bail bonds in Derby work?

- Booking. The person is photographed, fingerprinted and listed on the Sedgwick County inmate search. Each charge shows its own bond amount.
- Bond is set. On a city charge, K.S.A. 12-4213 requires bond to be set within 18 hours of custody. A person arrested without a warrant and held 48 hours with no first appearance before a municipal judge must be released on personal recognizance.
- Bond is posted. At the jail in Wichita. You can pay the full amount in cash, or a bondsman can post it for a premium.
- Release and a court date. The paperwork lists the date, the time and which court.
On a charge that would be a person offense, such as battery, the bond bars contact with the alleged victim for at least 72 hours under K.S.A. 12-4301. Domestic violence bookings also wait out a cooling off period that the Sheriff says varies by municipality. See domestic violence bail bonds in Wichita.
What a bondsman costs
Kansas sets the floor in K.S.A. 22-2809b: a premium of at least 10% of the bond, with at least half of that paid before posting.
| Bond | Minimum premium | Minimum due before posting |
|---|---|---|
| $250 | $25 | $12.50 |
| $500 | $50 | $25 |
| $1,500 | $150 | $75 |
| $5,000 | $500 | $250 |
City bonds are often small enough that a family can pay cash and get it back after the case. For larger bonds, a premium keeps the rest of your money free. Our payment plans page explains what can be financed.
Release on a signature
An OR bond costs nothing. The Sheriff limits it to people who live in the metro area, and Sedgwick County is on that list, so a Derby address qualifies. A DUI arrest adds a wait for a sober adult or up to four hours of observation. See OR bond in Sedgwick County.
Derby Municipal Court: days, times and cases
The City of Derby publishes this schedule for its court at 229 N Baltimore, Derby, KS 67037. The phone number is 316-788-1511.
| Docket | Day and time |
|---|---|
| Arraignments | Thursday, 9 a.m. |
| Video arraignments | Thursday, 12:30 p.m. |
| Trials and all other matters | Thursday, 2 p.m. |
The court hears violations of city ordinances. That covers traffic cases, fire code and property violations and other misdemeanor criminal matters. The city notes that more serious criminal matters are handled through the District Court.
Three practical points:
- Court is one day a week. A person arrested on a Friday does not wait until the next Thursday for a bond. The 18 hour rule applies no matter what day it is.
- Ask about the video docket. If someone is still in custody on a Derby case, call the court clerk and ask whether they will be on the 12:30 p.m. video arraignment docket.
- Holiday closures for late 2026. The court lists Veterans Day on November 11, Thanksgiving on November 26 and 27, and December 24 and 25.
Fines can be paid online through the city’s payment site, and the court posts a list of active warrants.
City charge or county charge?
One arrest in Derby can end up in either court.
| Charge | Where it is usually heard |
|---|---|
| Traffic ticket written by Derby Police | Derby Municipal Court |
| First DUI under the city ordinance | Derby Municipal Court |
| Misdemeanor theft or battery under city code | Derby Municipal Court |
| Any felony | Sedgwick County District Court, 525 N Main |
| Citation from a Sheriff’s deputy or a trooper | Sedgwick County District Court |
The bond paperwork tells you which one. If it is the District Court, read our guide to the first appearance in Sedgwick County. For charge specific help, see DUI bail bonds in Wichita, theft bail bonds in Wichita and felony bail bonds in Wichita.
What about a Derby warrant?
A missed Thursday court date can turn into a bench warrant. A Derby warrant is cleared with the Derby court, not at Wichita City Hall or the county courthouse. Call the court at 316-788-1511 before you go and ask what the judge requires.
If you are stopped on Rock Road or K-15 with an active warrant, you will be booked in Wichita and the bond on the warrant will have to be posted there. A planned surrender with a bond already arranged is usually faster than an arrest at the roadside. Our page on bench warrants and arrest warrants in Kansas explains the difference between the two.
Frequently asked questions
Does Derby have its own jail?
Derby arrests are booked at the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility in Wichita, which books for every municipality in the county.
Can a Wichita bondsman post a bond for a Derby case?
Yes. The bond is posted at the county jail in Wichita, which is where we work every day.
How far is the jail from Derby?
About ten miles. Take K-15 north toward downtown Wichita. The jail is on Elm Street, just north of the courthouse.
When is Derby Municipal Court?
Every Thursday. Arraignments are at 9 a.m., video arraignments at 12:30 p.m. and trials and other matters at 2 p.m.
What if the person lives at McConnell or is from out of state?
Release on a signature is harder for people who do not live in the metro area, so a surety bond is the usual route.
