A Sedgwick County Jail release happens at the Adult Detention Facility, 141 W Elm, in downtown Wichita. After the bond is posted, jail staff process the release and the person leaves from that building. There is no fixed release time. What you can control is being there, bringing the right ID and knowing the rules for property, money and DUI pick ups. This guide covers each one, using the Sheriff’s own published rules.
Case Bail Bonds is three blocks away at 705 N Broadway. If we posted the bond, call (316) 900-1667 and we will tell you where things stand.

How long does a Sedgwick County Jail release take?
The clock starts when the bond is accepted, not when you pay the bondsman. After that, the jail has to finish its own steps: confirm identity, check for other warrants and holds, return property and print the court paperwork.
Case Bail Bonds reports an average release time of about 50 minutes on the bonds it posts. Busy nights run longer. The Sheriff lists shift changes at 6:30 to 7:15 AM and 2:30 to 3:15 PM, and weekend nights bring more bookings.
Four things delay a release more than anything else:
- A hold from another agency. A warrant from another county, a parole hold or a federal hold keeps the person in custody even after the local bond is posted.
- A second case. Each charge has its own bond line. All of them have to be covered.
- A cooling off period. Domestic violence bookings must wait out a court ordered hold before bonding.
- A DUI. See the pick up rule below.

Where to go and what to bring

The jail sits on Elm Street between the Sedgwick County Courthouse and Pine Street, a short walk north of City Hall. The public lobby is where the deposit kiosk is, and the Sheriff says that kiosk is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Bring these with you:
- Your own photo ID
- A charged phone, since the person coming out may not have theirs working
- A jacket in winter. People are released in what they were arrested in, and a July arrest outfit does not suit a January night on Elm Street
- A ride plan. Do not count on the person driving, above all after a DUI arrest
Before you leave home, confirm the person is still at 141 W Elm. The Sheriff also houses inmates at the Annex, 701 W Harry, and sometimes in jails in other Kansas counties. The Sedgwick County inmate search shows where someone is held. The jail’s automated line is 316-660-5245, which spells 660-JAIL.
The DUI pick up rule
The Sheriff’s bond page has a rule that surprises families. A person arrested for DUI who is approved for release on their own recognizance must wait until a sober adult picks them up, or until the booking sergeant judges that they can function alone. The sergeant may observe them for up to four hours.
So if your brother was arrested on Kellogg at midnight and you are the ride, go. Showing up sober is what gets him out sooner. More on this in DUI bail bonds in Wichita.
Getting keys, a wallet or money while the person is still in jail
Sometimes the person is not getting out tonight, but you need what was in their pockets: car keys, house keys, a debit card for rent. The Sheriff allows an inmate to release personal property and money to someone outside. The rules are specific.
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Where | Front lobby of the jail, 141 W Elm |
| Hours | 6 AM to 10 PM, 7 days a week |
| Times to avoid | Shift changes: 6:30 to 7:15 AM and 2:30 to 3:15 PM |
| ID | A physical, unexpired ID such as a driver’s license, state ID, passport or military ID |
| Who decides | The inmate. Releases happen at the inmate’s discretion |
| How many times | Once. Property and money are released one time only |
| Who must be there | The person receiving the items, in person |
Because it can only be done once, agree with the person inside on exactly what you are picking up before you go. The Sheriff warns that wait times can be lengthy.
Putting money on the books before release
If release is a few days off, you can add money to the person’s jail account for commissary and phone calls.
- Lobby kiosk. Takes cash, credit and debit cards. Funds post immediately. The fee on cash is at least $3.25. The fee on a card is $3.25 or 10% of the deposit, whichever is greater.
- Online. Card deposits can be made through JailATM.
- Clothing. Socks and underwear cannot be dropped off. They are bought through commissary.
If the person is housed in another county, deposited funds are held until they return to Sedgwick County. Our guide to Sedgwick County Jail phone calls and visitation covers calls, messages and visits.
Before you drive away: check three things
- The court date. It is printed on the bond paperwork. Put it in two phones.
- The court. Wichita Municipal Court is at 455 N Main. Sedgwick County District Court is at 525 N Main. They are different buildings.
- The conditions. A no contact order, a curfew or a travel limit starts the moment the person walks out. On a domestic case, the released person cannot go back to a shared home.

Frequently asked questions
How do I bail someone out of the Sedgwick County Jail?
Find the bond amount, then either pay the full amount in cash at the jail or call a bondsman, who posts it for a premium of at least 10% under Kansas law. Start with our page on Sedgwick County Jail bail bonds.
What does annex mean at the jail?
The Annex is a second Sheriff’s facility at 701 W Harry. It opened in January 2019 in the former Work Release building and holds 180 inmates to ease crowding downtown.
Can I call the jail and ask to talk to an inmate?
No. Inmates can call out, but you cannot be put through to one. In a real emergency a supervisor takes the message and the inmate calls back.
Can I pick up property after the person has been released?
The person normally gets their own property back when they are released. The lobby process above is for handing items to someone else while they are still inside.
Is the jail lobby open at night?
The Sheriff lists the lobby kiosk as available 24 hours a day. Property and money releases stop at 10 PM.
